We booked a night’s stay at The Doi Villa from booking.com. We booked this place because of the pictures that we saw on the booking website as well as the numerous positive reviews on their Facebook page. We were shocked when we first arrived at the place.
The Doi Villa is located at one of the small villages in Mae Wang district off the main road. The smaller roads were not fully mapped-out on Google Maps and there were outdated roads that included a bridge that was destroyed and no longer in use. We had to use coordinates to locate this place.
Initially, we thought that we were lost as there were no signboards at the entrance of the compound. Our host came out to greet us as we turned into the driveway which confirmed that we were at the right place.
Our host stays inside the house that is located right by the entrance of the compound. The huts were located a few meters up the slope along the side of the hill. We were the only travellers as it was a lull season and to our dismay the restaurant was also not in operation. Our host checked us into our hut and we had to settle for snacks that we bought from the supermarket earlier for our dinner.
Though the compound was super out of the way, it offered superb views of the night sky as there was minimal light pollution around the entire area.
The hut was small and offered basic amenities. The lack of air-conditioning wasn’t much of an issue if you are just staying for a night, as the night breeze was enough to cool down the hut. In the day time, the hut felt like an oven.
Being out in the “wild” also meant that mosquitoes are a problem, so do bring along insect repellents.
Common toilets and shower facilities are located within another building inside the compound.
The Doi Villa has the potential to provide a much better experience if you were to visit it during peak periods. Most of their facilities revolved around the sharing of common space with other travellers such as a campfire pit. The inaccessibility of the place meant that having your own vehicle or a hired driver is a must to bring you to and out of the villa.
