We only had a very specific period that we could fly to Bangkok as a family, and that period was over the Christmas weekend. I have been checking Scoot’s Tuesday Morning Glory sales for a few weeks and the best price that I found was always around SGD$200/pax. I decided to search for promotional flights on Singapore Airlines (SQ) and managed to book four return tickets at SGD$246.60/pax. The flight timings were not ideal, but they offered the best price. Our flight to Bangkok was scheduled at 4pm (GMT +8) and our return flight was at 9:45am (GMT +7).

We got to Changi Airport at 1pm on Tuesday (Dec 21 2015). We checked-in using the self service kiosk. The process itself was quite self-explanatory with on-screen instructions and staff who were present to help out travellers.

The process however was more cumbersome than Peach Airlines as there are a few options that you can choose to retrieve your flight itinerary. After the itinerary is retrieved, you will have to scan each passenger’s passport for verification. The kiosk will print your baggage tags as well as boarding passes. Tag your own baggage and drop them off any one of the baggage counters. For travellers who have the habit of collecting boarding passes, do note that the boarding passes are not printed on the typical card material but on normal receipt paper that budget airlines use instead.

Boarding the flight was very different from what I was used to (even for a SQ flight). The doors leading to the sky bridge was already open when we arrived at the gate. There were passengers who were just chilling out at the gate area, and there were also random groups of passengers who were boarding the plane. No staff were at the doors giving any instructions and passengers were just boarding on their own time. We boarded the plane and there were already other passengers who have boarded the plane before us.

The in-flight entertainment system (Krisworld) was available from the moment we boarded the plane (previously the system was disabled during take-off and landings).

The flight to Bangkok took 2 hours. Meal service commenced the moment the seat belt sign went off and the flight attendants were in full swing to ensure that everyone’s meals were served and completed before landing. Two meal options were available that day. A choice of grilled chicken with mashed potatoes or seafood fried kway teow (thick rice noodles).

I chose the former with a glass of white wine. Appetiser was a small strip of grilled chicken served with thai-style sweet potato. The chicken was dry and severely under-seasoned. The sweet potato was badly prepared; the texture was inconsistent from piece to piece. Sweet would probably be the only word I can use to describe them.

The main was a piece of grilled chicken breast served alongside mashed potatoes, carrots and broccoli. Similar to the appetiser, the chicken was way too overcooked and dry. The meat was very tough to chew on and the dish was just tasteless. Every item on the plate required additional salt and pepper.

The dessert was the only dish that stood out. The chocolate cake was surprisingly rich and sweet and its spongey texture was very soft and light.
